SOME TERRIFIC CLEANING TIPS
from askannamoseley.com
Here are a few favorite cleaning tips:
|

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me.

Dear Women of St. Luke Parish,
The month of March is supposed to come in like a lion and out like a lamb! At this point, let's hope we don't see any 'lion like' weather. We certainly have been blessed with a mild winter so far. Hoping for even nicer weather as spring rolls in.
We would like to thank parishioner Rita Johnston and her terrific staff for opening up her salon Elan on Sunday, February 12th to the SLWC for a special open house. We had over 40 women attend and many took advantage of the awesome salon discounts and felt good about treating themselves, especially right before Valentine's Day. Elan is just down the block from St. Luke church on Lake Street. They offer all types of full salon services for women and men.
This Friday, March 9, 2012 the SLWC has committed to sponsoring the Simple Lenten Supper after the Stations of the Cross. We want to invite you all to join us and will need volunteers (details below). This year Stations have been moved to 6:00pm in the church, the simple meal is served immediately following in Waldron Hall.
Have a terrific March, wishing you lots of luck and Irish blessings, a filled belly on the feast of St. Joseph, and hope you find inspiration in many of the bold female pioneers of our past who have played a significant role in history.
Thank you for your continued support.
Warm Regards,
Molly Hague

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS FRIDAY, MARCH 9 2012!!!

A different ministry group will provide a meatless meal in Waldron Hall immediately after the weekly Friday evening Stations of the Cross during Lent. In order to accommodate timing -
they have changed Stations of the Cross to begin at 6:00pm this year on all Fridays. It normally takes about 45 minutes to get through all the stations.

MAY CROWNING:
We are still thinking of ideas for the parish wide May Crowning. If you have attended one or have any ideas, please get in touch with one of us.
GOLF LEAGUE:
We are also looking into a golf league at Indian Boundary Golf Course and should have some details soon. This will most likely be one night a week beginning mid May and run 10 weeks.
GARDEN WALK:
And we already heard from a couple of you on the Garden Walk which we will be on Saturday, June 16, 2012. We are looking for people to volunteer their garden for a couple of hours. The walk may be from 10am-2pm and will be held in outside gardens only. Ticket holders can start and end at any garden - so it's a very loose schedule. Ideally we would love to get some homes in the same area so it is walkable. There's a chance we may have an open reception with refreshments at St. Luke or another location close to gardens that makes sense. If interested in volunteering your garden - please contact Noreen Leavy - nonomck@hotmail.com or 708 404 0556.

Misericordia Candy Days
Friday, April 27 &
Saturday, April 28
|
Cynthia is still looking for volunteers, please get in touch with her if you are interested!
SLWC Member Cynthia Maroon approached our group to see if we were interested in helping with Misericordia Candy Days.
We felt this was a great fit for our group and wanted to support it for a number of different reasons. Cynthia and her family have long time ties to St. Luke (32 years!). Additionally, Misericordia also holds a special place in their hearts. Cynthia's son, Jon, has called Misericordia his "home" for nearly 28 years. Misericordia provides "a continum of care and a network of services for people with developmental disabilities". Misericordia began it's mission in 1921 and is part of the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The home and campus is located on the northside of Chicago. We're sure you know at least one person connected to Misericordia, so it's a great cause to support. To get more information about Misericordia please click below.
Click here for more information on Misericordia Homes
Misericordia Candy Days will be Friday, April 27 from 6am-6pm and Saturday, April 28th from 8am-4pm. You would be asked to volunteer by standing at local locations and soliciting monetary donations and handing out candy to generous donors. There are no age limitations, so if you want to do this with your children you can (they tend to collect the most amount of money!).
Contact Cynthia Maroon to give her more information on your availability or have more questions. A Location Coordinator will then get in touch with you to firm up your location and time.
Cynthia Maroon - cmaroon@yahoo.com or 708 366 8133
*If you are a regular volunteer who has done this in the past and have not heard from a Location Coordinator by mid-March please contact Cynthia*
Thanks Cynthia for suggesting a terrific idea!!

St. Joseph Table Traditions
|
|
St. Joseph's Day is a big Feast for Italians because in the Middle Ages, God, through St. Joseph's intercessions, saved the Sicilians from a very serious drought. So in his honor, the custom is for all to wear red, in the same way that green is worn on St. Patrick's Day.
On this day, after Mass (at least in parishes with large Italian populations), a big altar ("la tavola di San Giuse" or "St. Joseph's Table") is laden with food contributed by everyone (note that all these St. Joseph celebrations might take place on the nearest, most convenient weekend). Different Italian regions celebrate this day differently, but all involve special meatless foods: minestrone, pasta with breadcrumbs (the breadcrumbs symbolize the sawdust that would have covered St. Joseph's floor), seafood, Sfinge di San Giuseppe, and, always, fava beans, which are considered "lucky" because during the drought, the fava thrived while other crops failed.
The table -- which is always blessed by a priest -- will be in three tiers, symbolizing the Most Holy Trinity. The top tier will hold a statue of St. Joseph surrounded by flowers and greenery. The other tiers might hold, in addition to the food: flowers (especially lilies); candles; figurines and symbolic breads and pastries shaped like a monstrance, chalices, fishes, doves, baskets, St. Joseph's staff, lilies, the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts, carpentry tools, etc.; 12 fishes symbolizing the 12 Apostles; wine symbolizing the miracle at Cana; pineapple symbolizing hospitality; lemons for "luck"; bread and wine (symbolizing the Last Supper); and pictures of the dead. There will also be a basket in which the faithful place prayer petitions.
The cry "Viva la tavola di San Giuse!" begins the feasting and is heard throughout the day. When the eating is done, the St. Joseph's altar is smashed, and then three children dressed as the Holy Family will knock on three doors, asking for shelter. They will be refused at the first two, and welcomed at the third, in memory of the Holy Family's seeking of hospitality just before Christ was born. This re-enactment is called "Tupa Tupa," meaning "Knock Knock."
The day ends with each participant taking home a bag that might be filled with bread, fruit, pastries, cookies, a medal of St. Joseph, a Holy Card and/or a blessed fava bean. Keep your "lucky bean," and let it remind you to pray to St. Joseph. (The Litany of St. Joseph would be most appropriate today! You can download the Litany, in Microsoft Word .doc format, in English and in Latin).

Women's History Month traces its origins to International Women's Day, which took place for the first time on March 8, 1911. This later served as the focal point of National Women's History Week, officially recognized by Presidential Proclamation in 1980. Finally, in 1987, Congress expanded this event into a month-long celebration.
